Mō te tūranga | About the role:
As a Rōia | Lawyer at Matatū Aotearoa, you’ll provide practical legal and process advice across the organisation. You’ll also advise on matters relating to the Official Information Act, Privacy Act, Ombudsman cases, and complaints involving disciplinary bodies.
Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, you’ll be part of a high-performing legal team committed to fairness, integrity, and continuous improvement.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Supporting fair and robust investigations into teacher conduct and competence
- Advising Council decision-making bodies
- Assisting with prosecutions before the Teachers Disciplinary Tribunal
- Providing legal advice on OIA, Privacy Act, and Ombudsman matters
- Contributing to projects and processes shaped by Te Tiriti o Waitangi
Some travel within Aotearoa may be required to attend hearings and engage with the profession.

The successful candidate will be a confident communicator who thrives in a collaborative environment. You bring sound legal judgment, strong relationship-building skills, and a sharp eye for detail.
To be considered for this position, you’ll bring:
- Minimum two years’ experience PQE as a lawyer, and litigation experience in Court or within a regulatory body or professional membership body
- Current practising certificate
- Strong competency of Tikanga, Te Ao Māori, Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and Te Reo Māori would be an advantage
- Litigation experience in Court and with disciplinary bodies
- Demonstrated ability to understand, analyse and accurately convey complex information in clear and simple written language
- Excellent relationship management skills, building and maintaining effective relationships and networks
